Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey has denied the charges to making false statements to US legislators and hindering a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's lawyer submitted the answer acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

Patrick Fitzgerald declared he would attempt to have the proceedings terminated for multiple factors including that his client, a detractor of former President Trump, was being singled out.

James Comey was formally accused just days after Donald Trump pressured his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Court Developments

During the hearing on mid-week, his attorney Patrick Fitzgerald informed the judge they intended to submit multiple motions to throw out the case before a legal hearing, claiming the legal action was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was unlawfully appointed to handle the proceedings.

The former director's case was originally managed by Erik Siebert, who resigned under pressure from Trump after his investigation into another political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.

Judicial Environment

The former director seemed in good spirits as he walked into the courtroom on mid-week, conversing with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was supported by his wife, his wife and offspring Maureen Comey, a government attorney who the former government recently fired.

Upon hearing to the court read his constitutional guarantees and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, the defendant was inquired if he comprehended the accusations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you very much," he told the proceedings.

Historical Information

The former director was the head of the FBI from four years and was terminated about several months into Trump's first term as president. At the time, Mr Comey was overseeing an probe into foreign election meddling and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and the presidential campaign.

During his tenure, Mr Comey triggered a backlash from the Democratic party when he announced just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was examining political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Clinton were not filed, resulting in criticism from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

Prosecutors allege James Comey lied to Congress during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the Clinton investigation as well as the Russia election probe. They allege he misled the legislative body by claiming he had not permitted a person at the agency to release to news outlets details about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also allege Mr Comey of "wrongfully trying to influence, block and slow" the legislative group by making false statements to it.

Public Statements

In a video James Comey shared to his social media after he was charged, he said he was innocent and accused Donald Trump of acting like a "tyrant".

"Our household have known for years that there are consequences to standing up to Mr Trump," he stated. "We refuse to live on our knees."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a court case."

The accusations against James Comey emerged after Donald Trump shared on online platforms insisting on his attorney general, Pam Bondi, take legal action against James Comey and additional individuals.
