The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after failing a vote of confidence that followed his controversial online comments about the conservative activist.

The motion against George Abaraonye achieved the necessary super-majority to remove him from office, according to an announcement from the organization.

Disputed Comments

The dispute began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly posted messages on social media that seemed to celebrate the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while addressing a college in the United States.

According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.

The president-elect is also reported to have posted in a messaging group with other members seeming to express approval of the event.

Vote Outcome

The vote of confidence was conducted over the weekend, with results announced on Tuesday.

Society announcements showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of removal, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.

The notice confirmed that the future president was deemed to have resigned in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.

Procedural Disputes

Proceedings were informally suspended early on Monday after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from multiple individuals.

In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His response unequivocally denied that any representative appointed by the student had engaged in intimidating or disruptive behavior.

Ongoing Dispute

The president-elect maintained that significant concerns had been submitted to the governing body and that he continued as the elected leader.

His comment added that George was "grateful and honored to have the support of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who supported a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Critics have said that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the society has prioritized politics over principles".

External Responses

On Friday, Mikey McCoy read out an open letter to the society on a related program broadcast.

The letter accused the union of becoming a place where "presidents of the union openly applaud the assassination of a ideological rival".

The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".

The society had previously criticized Mr Abaraonye's remarks after Kirk's death and stated that complaints filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The student leader had been one of multiple members to debate with Kirk at the union in May.
